Advisory Boards & Councils

What are advisory boards /councils?

An Advisory Council is a group of leading professionals drawn from outside the university, who have special knowledge and expertise. They are organized to advise and assist in the planning, development and evaluation of a program. The Board/Council communicates with the educators about the status of the work world and serves to assist students in making their transition from school to work.

 

School of Information Technology advisory boards / councils

Business and Industry Advisory Council (BIAC) - BIAC is an advisory council composed of leading IT professionals who represent a diverse group of business and industry organizations. The purpose of BIAC is three-fold:

  1. To provide advice to the School of Information Technology (IT) in developing appropriate programs and practices for preparing students to enter the IT field.
  2. To facilitate cooperation and communication between the university and the public, organizations, businesses and industries within the region.
  3. To assist the School of Information Technology in securing resources necessary to fulfill its mission and goals.

Telecommunications Advisory Board (TAB) - TAB is an advisory board composed of leading IT professionals who represent the Telecommunications industry. The purpose of TAB is three-fold:

  1. To provide advice to the School of Information Technology (IT) in developing appropriate programs and practices for preparing students to enter the IT field.
  2. To facilitate cooperation and communication between the university and the public, organizations, businesses and industries within the region.
  3. To assist the School of Information Technology in securing resources necessary to fulfill its mission and goals.

Functions of the advisory board / council

The Advisory Board/Council assists with the following functions as they relate to programs within the School of Information Technology (IT):

  1. Assisting the faculty in developing long-range goals and plans as they relate to the industry and community needs;
  2. Suggesting time frames and priorities for the implementation of these plans;
  3. Promoting effective student recruitment and student career development programs;
  4. Designing and implementing student placement and follow-up activities;
  5. Recommending needed changes to continue a quality program;
  6. Advising on curriculum content;
  7. Reviewing equipment facilities and resources;
  8. Identifying available community and industry resources;
  9. Promoting professional practice and internship experiences in the Information Technology business/industry.
  10. Being involved in public relations as an advocate for IT Programs; and
  11. Acting as an agent of change to increase the relevance of the programs.
