Internship Requirements

All students in the School of Information Technology must complete a Professional Practice Requirement. Information contained here will assist you in registering for and submitting evaluations for the Professional Practice requirement of your degree program.

If you need more information, please feel free to contact the School of Information Technology Advising Office.

Students enrolling in an internship must do so prior to the last semester of classes. The Internship is an interaction of education and employment that allows the student to understand how education prepares the student for full time employment. Students who wait until their last semester to enroll in the internship will be denied admission to the program. These students will complete an alternate requirement. To learn about the alternate requirement, see the IT Advisor.

How to Register

Registration for the Professional Practice component of your degree is an easy process.

  1. Locate an internship which meets the criteria.
    • It is strongly suggested you obtain a detailed job description and review it with Internship Coordinator Tal Parmenter to ensure the position is appropriate to receive Professional Practice credit in your course of study. The following documents provide guidance in selecting an appropriate position:
  2. Complete the registration forms
  3. Obtain an employment confirmation letter
    • Students who have a position located on campus at Illinois State may have the ISU supervisor send an e-mail confirming employment to Mr. Tal Parmenter. The email must include the student name, a description outlining the tasks to be performed and skills related to the position, and the beginning and ending date of the position.
    • Students with positions off campus must obtain an employment confirmation letter from their employer, on their employer's letterhead, confirming their employment as an intern. The letter must include the student name, a description outlining the tasks to be performed, the skills related to the position and the beginning and ending date of the position.
  1. Submit all completed forms and employment confirmation letter to the School of Information Technology Advising Office in OU 202, Attention Mr. Tal Parmenter
  2. When you receive notification your application is approved, register for Professional Practice. Registration for Professional Practice is by permit only. You will be unable to register until notified of approval.

Submitting Evaluations

Prior to receiving a grade for Professional Practice, the student is responsible for having the following sent to the School of Information Technology Advising Office.

  • Complete an Exit Interview with the Faculty Coordinator, Mr. Tal Parmenter. It is your responsibility to contact Mr. Parmenter and make arrangements for the interview. View Mr. Tal Parmenter's profile page for his contact information.

Evaluations are due on the last Friday of Evaluation period during the term in which the student is enrolled in Professional Practice. The School of Information Technology is aware that it is not always possible to submit the evaluation on time. Students who will not meet the deadline are encouraged to contact the School of Information Technology Advising Office to let us know the forms will be delayed.
